At a glittering ceremony in New Delhi on March 27, President R. Venkataraman conferred on President Yasser Arafat of Palestine the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 1988. The Award carries a citation and cash money of Rs. 1.5 million.
Accepting the Award, Mr. Arafat announced that the award money would be converted into a fund for constituting an annual Indo-Arab award for achievements in science and technology and promotion of democracy, human dignity and freedom, for consolidation of unity in India and for development of Arab and Indian relations.

Mr. Arafat also called for a new orientation to the non-aligned movement “so that through it we are able to face the era of new rapprochement dawning among other major world powers.”
